Mrs. Benson Peck, of Wood County, was frightened to death by a bear the other day. She was picking berries in the woods near her home, when she heard footsteps, and turning saw a huge black bear coming toward her. She dropped her berries and ran some distance, when she fainted and fell over a pine log. On regaining her senses she saw the bear quietly eating her berries, and managed to slip away without attracting his attention. The shock she had sustained was more than she could bear, however, and after an illness of several days she gradually sank and died.

FOUND DEAD IN BED
Ernest Derby, 64 years, a resident of Loyal passed away at the Juneau hotel Monday, death resulting from heart failure. He was found dead in bed yesterday morning. Deceased was one of Loyal's best known business men. He was a well driller by occupation. The body was sent to Loyal Tuesday night, from where it will be taken to Greenwood where the funeral services and interment will take place Thursday.

Death of John Rose
John Rose died at home in Baraga Tuesday after an illness of two weeks,
at the
age of 62 years. The deceased was a pioneer resident of Baraga and at one time
millwright at the Nester mill. He leaves to mourn his loss besides his wife,
five children, four boys, Albert, Arthur, George and Fred and one daughter, May.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon, services being at the M. E. church,
Rev. Brown and Rev. Biretam officiating. Interment was in the Baraga cemetery.

Mrs. Louisa Rose, 86, of Baraga, Dies
Mrs. Louisa Rose, 86, widely known Baraga resident, died yesterday
morning at
5:30 at the home of her daughter Mrs. William St. George of L'Anse. She was born
in Syracuse, New York in 1854, the daughter of Warden and Lauretta Stafford.
Mrs. Rose came to Wisconsin at the age of three weeks with her parents. In 1875
she married John B. Rose in Newport Wisconsin. Ten children were born to the
couple. They came to Baraga in 1902, where Mr. Rose, who died in 1914, was
employed as a millwright at the Nestor mill. Surviving Mrs. Rose, in addition to
Mrs. St. George, are a son, Fred of Baraga; three brothers, Will and John
Stafford of Oxford Wis., and Nate of Harvey, N. D.; 25 grandchildren and 12
great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2
o'clock in the Baraga Methodist church, the Rev. Oatey, officiating. Burial will
be in the Baraga cemetery.
