William Winfield Crippen is the latest of at
least seven area pioneering funeral directors found buried at Grand View
Memorial Park. Mr. Crippen was
born in Iowa on December 26,
1884 and passed away in Los
Angeles on March 10, 1956.
He is entombed in the Great
Mausoleum along with his
father, Charles
(1855-1937) and his wife
Ethel, who
passed away in 1988 at the
age of 101. His obituary was
published in The Los
Angeles Times on March
12, 1956, which notes that
his arrangements were
handled by the mortuary he
founded:
Crippen Mortuary was founded
in 1928 by William & Ethel
Crippen and has been in
operation continuously at
its present location in La
Crescenta,
California. In June of 2005 Crippen
Mortuary assumed the
pre-needs of
Eckerman-Heisman Funeral
Service of Burbank and
moved the pre-needs to the
La Crescenta facility, this
will provide those
pre-arranged policy holders
to be assured that their
arrangements will be honored
without interruption. We
also offer the
Burbank, North Hollywood,
Glendale area the same personal service given by Eckerman-Heisman
Funeral Service since 1943.
In November 2007 Crippen
Mortuary opened an
arrangement office in Santa
Clarita for the purpose of
offering families in the
Santa Clarita Valley a
choice of mortuary services
in their area.
As the only independently
owned and operated funeral
home in the Foothills, we
strive to provide the
finest, most compassionate
care to each and every
family we serve. For more
than 81 years, we have
proven that it is possible
to provide affordable
funeral and cremation
services without sacrificing
quality.

A tradition
of personalized care,
dignified service
Oftentimes, a
business contribution to
the community is subjective and difficult to
measure. However, occasionally a business is
so deeply rooted into an area that its
importance is beyond question. Such is the
case with the longstanding La Crescenta
institution, Crippen Mortuary.
Founded by
William and Ethel Crippen in
1928, Crippen Mortuary has remained in the
hands of the Crippen family for 82 years.
The business has since been passed down to
their daughter, Margaret Crippen Wurtz, who
will be celebrating her 97th birthday on
July 1.
Bob Hansen,
who works with Crippen as the
funeral director, has had a large part in
the mortuarys contribution to the Crescenta
Valley. Hansen himself has been integral to
the history of the area, serving as both the
president of the CV Chamber of Commerce as
well as being honored as the honorary mayor
of La Crescenta.
Since weve
been here so long and we are
the last independent mortuary in the area,
we have seen more people turn to us in
recent years, said Hansen. Our independent
status allows us to be less expensive than
corporate funeral services while remaining
more personally accommodating to the
personal needs of each family.
Although the
presence of their services
has remained constant for the better part of
a century, part of Crippens success is
related to their ability to adapt and grow
in relation to their surroundings.
We will
strive to continue to meet the
needs and requests of the community,
remarked Hansen. I feel strongly that our
presence is needed and appreciated.
In his years
with Crippen Mortuary,
Hansen has also witnessed and shared moments
of pain and heartbreak amongst the rest of
the Crescenta Valley. However, Crippens has
remained a steadfast pillar of strength even
during the most difficult times.
When the
area has been struck with
tragedy, the community has consistently
joined together in support, commented
Hansen. At the recent passing of a
local
soldier serving in Iraq, it
was
moving to see so many people offer his
family their support and gratitude for his
sacrifice.
In my
profession, you see families at
their most vulnerable state, he added.
They need to be helped and supported.
Crippen
Mortuary has also expanded in
recent years, offering their services beyond
the Crescenta-Cañada area. In June of 2005
they took control of business operations of
another longstanding local mortuary,
Eckerman-Heisman Funeral Service in the
Burbank area. Additionally, they recently
expanded into the Santa Clarita area with
the opening of an arrangement office in
2007.
The
institution of Crippen Mortuary will
remain steadfast in the community and
continue to service with simplicity and
dignity, concluded Hansen. We strive to
serve our friends and neighbors as would
want to be served.

Phyllis Jeanne MacDonald died of
natural causes on August 14, 2016 in La Crescenta, California. She was born on
February 27, 1925 in Orosi, California, to her parents, Frank and Norma Popelka.
Phyllis moved to Montrose in the late '30's and graduated from Glendale High
School in 1943. In March of 1946, Phyllis married Bruce Mace MacDonald and lived
in La Crescenta until her passing. She was preceded in death by her parents,
Frank and Norma, her husband, Bruce and her brother, Kent Popelka. She is
survived by her two sons, Kirk Stewart MacDonald of La Crescenta and Gary
Randall MacDonald of San Diego, and her daughter-in-law Wendy Louise MacDonald
of San Diego. She is also survived her grandchildren, Ian Bruce MacDonald of
Alameda, California; Brianna Joy MacDonald of San Carlos, California; and Megan
Kathleen MacDonald of La Mirada, California. Phyllis was also the great
grandmother to three boys, Connor Bruce MacDonald and Brent Robert MacDonald,
both of Alameda, California and Michael MacDonald Sandoval of San Carlos,
California. She was also the aunt and great aunt to many nephews and nieces.
Phyllis had many accomplishments: she was the PTA President of Dunsmore
Elementary School, a member of PEO and of Amaranth and retired from JPL where
she worked for many years. She was also an active member and a deacon of the La
Crescenta Presbyterian Church. Her greatest achievement, however, was her role
as Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma and Friend; especially to her dearest and best
friend, her sister-in-law, Virginia MacDonald. Her favorite pastimes included:
gardening, canning, baking, sewing and crocheting, teaching her grandchildren
how to do cartwheels, attending sports' events as a vocal and excited fan
whether it be her son's track meets or her grandchildren's many sports events.
She was the beloved Team Grandma to the Occidental Women's Varsity Soccer Team
where her youngest grand-daughter played. Phyllis left a legacy of giving,
forgiving and love. She is loved by many and will be missed by all. A private
service was held on August 26, 2016 at Smith Mountain Cemetery in Dinuba,
California, where she was laid to rest beside her late husband, Bruce. A
memorial service to honor and celebrate Phyllis' life will be held on Saturday,
September 24, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the La Crescenta Presbyterian Church, 2902
Montrose Avenue, La Crescenta, California, with a reception at the church
following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made
in Phyllis' name to Descanso Gardens, The Stroke Research Program at Glendale
Adventist Hospital, Oakpark Convalescent Home or the La Crescenta Presbyterian
Church. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Oakpark and to Dr.
Leland Watkins for the wonderful care given to Phyllis. May God bless us all.
