call on his sweetheart, he was surrounded by a pack of coyotes when about a
mile from home. He had no weapons and broke all records for long distance
running. The animals followed him to the door of his home but failed to
attack him - Mandan Daily Pioneer.

alone from California, and is making an extended trip, visiting in Minnesota
and North Dakota and other points in Wisconsin. She will also visit at the
home of another son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Miller, Granton.
The Millers recently took up their residence in Granton, having lived in New
York until a short time ago.

Mrs. Helen M. Sovereign, who has
been a house guest of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. B. J.
Higgins, S. Ash Ave., left last night to continue her visit with relatives
in Minneapolis; her son in Boise, Idaho, and friends in Portland, Ore.,
before returning to her home in Los Angeles sometime in September. It was
the first time in 30 years that Mrs. Higgins had seen her sister. While in
this area she visited another sister, Mrs. Ira Miller at Granton. Prior to
coming to Marshfield, Mrs. Sovereign visited several weeks with relatives
and friends in Albuquerque, N. M., Omaha, Neb., and points in Illinois.

Granton Boy Hurt in Bike Accident
GRANTON - Robert D. Guy,
15-year-old son of Mrs. Cora Guy, Granton, suffered a fractured leg as the
result of an accident in front of the Granton High School on CTH K about 8 p.m.
Tuesday. According to Officer Dale Schultz, young Guy was riding a bicycle, and
was hanging onto a car driven by Larry Meissner, Rt. 1, Chili. Meissner told the
officer he warned Guy to let go of the car and when he didn't he stopped. The
boy fell from the bicycle, fracturing his leg in two places.

Mrs. Miller, nee Ida Abby, was born Jan. 12, 1898, at Milladore, Wis., daughter

Beulah, N. D., where she was married to Ira E. Miller July 20, 1916. He preceded
her in death in 1967. She has been a resident of Pulaski since 1964 and was
visiting a grandson, Pat Miller, at Manitowoc. She was a member of the VFW
Auxiliary of Shawano. Survivors include four sons, David and Douglas of
Milwaukee; Ira E. , Jr. of Portland, Ore., and Richard O. of Miami, Fla.; a
daughter, Mrs. Everett (Beverly) Meek, of Nashua, Mont., a sister, Mrs. Helen M.
Sovereign, of Los Angeles, Calif., 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Charles Abby, and was born on January 12, 1898,
in Mildore, Wis. She was raised in Beulah, North Dakota and since 1964 she
resided in Pulaski. In 1916 she was married to Ire E. Miller in Beulah, North
Dakota. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary of Shawano. Her husband preceded
her in death in 1967.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Everett (Beverly) Meek, Nashua, Montana; four
sons, David and Douglas of Milwaukee; Ira, Jr. of Portland, Oregon, and Richard
O. of Miami, Florida; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, and one
sister, Mrs. Helen Sovereign of Los Angeles, California. One son and one
daughter preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Urbanek-Schlei
Funeral Home in Manitowoc. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

housewife, died Thursday at a Glasgow hospital of natural causes. Graveside

of Glasgow is in charge. Meek was born Jan. 23, 1921, in Beach, N.D., and lived
there until moving with her family when they worked on the Fort Peck Dam
construction. They lived in McCone City near the dam site. In 1942 she married
Everett Meek at Brooklyn, N.Y. They lived in Nashua until 1978 when they moved
to Glasgow. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, needlework, reading and working

Alan Dale Meek , 70, passed away on Friday, August 7th, 2015 in
Virginia Beach.
Born on September 18th, 1944 in Brooklyn, he was the son of Everett Meek and
Beverly Meek. He was raised and went to Nashua Grade school and High School in
Montana. Meek was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served his country for 30
years before retiring in 1992 having attained the rank of Command Master Chief.
After retiring, he enjoyed taking trips in his RV, and being a ham radio
operator. He also enjoyed hunting deer and small game and listening to country
and western music.
He is survived by his wife Mary, and his sisters, Sharon Hodges of Colorado
Springs, CO., and Diedra Sorenson of Sidney, MT.
He was preceded in death by his parents Everett and Beverly Meek.

LAKIN - Andrew Appelhans Jr., 77, of Lakin,
died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses,
where he had been a resident.
He was born Oct. 10, 1927, in Graham County,
to Andrew Sr. and Catherina Gerstner Appelhans.
Mr. Appelhans was a custodian for USD No. 215
at Lakin. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
On July 31, 1967, he married Easther M. Green
in Ulysses. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Clarence "A.J."
Appelhans of Denton, Texas, and Christopher W. Appelhans of Lakin; a
brother, Marvin Appelhans of Hasty, Colo.; a sister, Olivia Lidwell of
Pennsylvania; four grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and
five brothers, Elmer, Richard, Edmond, Julius "Red" and Eugene Appelhans.
A memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Saturday at Church Of Christ, Lakin, officiated by Kenne Whitham,
minister.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's
Foundation or Western Prairie Special Care Unit, both in care of Grant
County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Leonard graduated from Lakin High School and then worked on a farm and a
machine shop. In 1964 he moved to Garden City and had his own welding
and fabrication shop called Brand X Service. He enjoyed hunting, gun
repair, watching drag races, his coin collection and especially being
involved with his Granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his
Parents & 1 Brother- Robert Green.

Graveside services for Alice I. Green, 71, will be held at the Lakin
Cemetery Friday morning, Nov. 2, at 10:00 o'clock with Pastor Marvin
Moberly officiating.
Mrs. Green died Oct. 29, 1990, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She
had lived at O'Loughlin Village in Lakin since 1986.
Alice was born in Bucklin, KS, Sept. 23, 1919, the daughter of E. Ray
Jenkins and Lavina Amrine Jenkins.
She was a retired homemaker and belonged to the Church of the Brethren
of Garden City.
Survivors include two sons: Leonard Green, Garden City, and Robert
Green, Westville, OK; a daughter, Esther Appelhans of Lakin, KS; three
sisters, Mae Webster, Torney, of Washington State, Marion Cantwell and
Velma Heckendorn, Denver, CO. Nine grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the Diabetes Foundation in care of
Greene-Schneider Funeral Home of Lakin.
Alice Irene was raised by her Aunt Mary Alice Amrine (Mrs. Earl L.
Elder) after her mother died when Irene was less than one year old.

Colleen R. Gordon
NASHUA Colleen R. Gordon, 55, of Nashua,
died of natural causes Tuesday, April 16.
Celebration of Life is 1 p.m. Sunday, April
28, at Pit Stop Restaurant, 1600 25th Ave.,
Black Eagle.
Colleen graduated from Nashua High School.
Colleen loved needlework, but her passion
was quilting and she was a member of the Ft.
Benton Eye of the Needle Guild and she was
formerly a member of the Great Falls Guild.
Colleen greatly loved her family, her many
friends and her two little dogs.
Colleen married Langston Gordon, July 1977,
and they lived in Great Falls.
Colleen is survived by her husband,
Langston; and her son, London Gordon of
Great Falls; and she has three
grandchildren, Samantha, London and Kara
Gordon of San Diego.
Her son, Jason Gordon, preceded her in death
in 2003.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting
that donations be made to the Dialysis Unit,
C/O of the Benefis Foundation.

Alan Dale Meek, 70, of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away
Friday, Aug. 7, 2015, in Virginia Beach.
Services will be

He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Everett L. Meek.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mary; one sister,
Sharon; and one brother-in-law, Leonard, of Colorado
Springs, Colo.

Berniece M. Selbrede, 82, of Sparta passed away on
Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at the Morrow Memorial Home in
Sparta. She was born on July 18, 1925, to William and
Catherine (Mullenberg) Hericks at St. Mary's Ridge, Wis.
She attended St. Mary's Ridge Catholic School.
Berniece worked at the Bodega Restaurant in La Crosse
and at the La Crosse Rubber Mills for a few years. In
1947, she met her future husband, Herbert Selbrede, at
the gas station in Leon, Wis. They were united in
marriage on Jan. 20, 1950, at St. Mary's Ridge. Berniece
enjoyed being a farm wife and a homemaker her entire
married life. She was well known for sewing wedding
dresses and bridesmaid's dresses. She served as a 4H
leader and was a member of the Leon Homemakers Club the
"Merry Dozen Homemakers". She enjoyed playing cards and
attending card parties. Most of all, she loved traveling
with Herb and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert of Leon;
children, Gayle Patraw of Prairie Du Chien, Wis., Jane
(Robert) Guy of Bloomington, Minn., Joan Jenkins of
Eagan, Minn., and Wayne (Barb) Selbrede of Leon;
grandchildren, Martina (Ryan) Sime of Seneca, Wis., Cory
Vieth of Denver, Tatum (Justin) Schroeder of Bangor,
Wis., Kimberly (Doug) Kerska of Houston, Minn., Lindsey
Jenkins of Onalaska, Wis., Heather (Brandon) Switz of
Fond du Lac, Wis., Whitney (William) Woodford of Blaine,
Minn.; great-grandchildren, Courtney, Taylor, McKenzie
and Ava Sime, Carly Schroeder, Joshua and Benjamin
Kerska, Noah and Benjamin Switz, and Lauren and Morgan
Woodford; her sister, Dorothy Brieske of Bangor; a
sister-in-law, Betty Hericks of Sparta; nieces, nephews,
other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and
Catherine; a grandson, Darin Libke; two infant brothers;
brothers, Arthur Hericks, Clement Hericks and Walter
Hericks; and sisters, Marie Brueggen, Leone Davidson,
Hilda Bever and Adeline Clement.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct.
16, at the Evangelical Free Church in Sparta. Family and
friends are invited for visitation from 4 until 7 p.m.
Monday, Oct. 15, at the Torkelson Page-Smith Funeral
Home in Sparta. Family and friends are also invited for
visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service
Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be given to the
charity of your choice, in memory of Berniece. The
Torkelson Page-Smith Funeral Home is assisting the

"Tailgate", age 71, of Two Rivers, passed away Wednesday,
June 29, 2021 at Aurora Medical Center in Two Rivers
following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born
November 29, 1949 in Columbia, MS. Michael served in the
U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War and was a proud member
of the Vietnam Veteran's Motorcycle Club. He lived a
colorful life and loved to be outdoors and on his
motorcycle. Michael is survived by a son, George Guy-Jacobi, and two
daughters, Rebecca Zahn and Katrina Johnson, grandchildren;
Cassandra Thomas, Kyle (Tatum) Christel, Kassandra Christel,
Macyn Elsen-Zahn, Arica Howard, Kalyn Brachmann, and Kristol
Johnson; great-grandchildren, Liam, Aubriella, and Camilla,
Mason, Norah and Marcella, and Amari, Jaylin, and Jenasis;
and brothers; William "Skippy" Guy and Robert Guy, as well
as his best friend, LeeRoi McTamany, and a special friend,
Pearl Luebke. His family wants to extend special thanks to
his niece, Michelle Anderson, and to his Vietnam Veteran
brothers for their lasting friendship. Michael was preceded
in death by his parents. A gathering of family and friends
will take place at a later date.
